25th anniversary of the purchase of Dragonera
Recently it was the 25th anniversary of the purchase of Dragonera by "El Consell insular" - the Island Council of Mallorca. The commemoration took place on the island itself, in Cala Lladó and a new guide for visiting the park was presented: an interactive application for smart phones and tablets.
In the 1970's a project to build a housing complex that included luxury homes, an hotel and a port posed a potential threat for Sa Dragonera so institutions, environmentalists and hundreds of individuals fought to prevent the island being developed.
"El Consell insular" - purchased Sa Dragonera on the 14th of July 1988, and subsequently it was declared a natural area of special interest (ISNA) giving it environmental protection. Since then it has become one of the largest protected areas in Spain. In 1995 the island was declared a nature reserve, to preserve it's ecosystem. In addition, many researchers visit the island every year to study it's natural environment.
