An old factory becomes a museum
After it’s complete rehabilitation, a ruinous though impressive ancient factory will be converted into a cultural and touristic attractive industrial museum.
Hard times of crisis require dynamic and visionary people, willing to make decisions. Thus, in Sóller, little town in the heart of the Sierra de Tramuntana, a vague project has been dozing during a couple of years until a private initiative put it into practice. The entrepreneur Franz Kraus, active part in the town’s life and foresightful businessman, together with the heirs of the building, former possession of Adela Oliver, will found a new museum in an old factory in the centre of Sóller. The “Fàbrica Nova “ is both, contemporary witness and a memorial monument of the ancient textile industry of late 19th century. Now it finally will be preserved from decay and converted into a cultural facility in the Sóller-valley.
In a recently given interview to the online edition of the “Diario de Mallorca”, from January, 27th 2013, Franz Kraus, the owner of the “Sa Fabrica de Gelats” (manufactory of quality ice-cream) and the delicatessen “Fet a Sóller”, Majorcan by choice and visionary, characterizes the project: “I want the Fàbrica Nova to be a live-museum and at the same time a fertile breeding ground of new ideas to push the town of Sóller”.
The spectator will not only learn about former ways of production and the history of the city, but also about current elaboration of local products as are sold by “Fet a Sóller”. The restoration of the building probably starts end of 2013. The opening of the new museum is scheduled for end of 2014. The municipality of Sóller certainly will appreciate the efforts, however, due to the private commitment of Kraus and Xavier Oliver, the representative of the heirs family, Sóller will obtain another cultural and touristic attraction and get rid of an incomplete burden.
