Mallorca wines with Designation of Origin

Mallorca has two wines with Designation of Origin: Binissalem and Pla i Llevant.

The Binissalem DO Regulation was approved by the Government of the Balearic Islands in late 1989. The vine-growing and wine-producing region associated with the Binissalem DO is situated in the heart of the island of Mallorca. The Tramuntana mountain ranges protect the area from cold north winds, helping to create a mild microclimate. To produce wines entitled to use the Binissalem DO, only the following varieties of grapes may be cultivated: Red wines: Manto Negro, Callet, Ull de llebre, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. White wines Moll or Premsal Blanco, Parellada, Macabeo, Moscatell and Chardonnay. Some of the Binissalem wineries are José Luis Ferrer, Macià Batle, Biniagual or Bennàssar. In 2012 the 15 wineries of Binissalem produced 12.955 hl on a surface area covered by vines of 424 hectares.

Pla i Llevant (The Plain and Eastern Mallorca) The area covered by the Pla i Llevant Designation of Origin is one of Mallorca's most traditional vine-growing and wine-producing areas, because vines have been grown here since the island's domination by the Romans. The Pla i Llevant DO was created in 1999. The Pla i Llevant DO Regulation establishes that the following grape varieties can be used in the production of wines entitled to use this designation of origin: Reds: Manto Negro, Callet, Fogoneu, Ull de Llebre, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir. Whites: Moll o Premsal Blanc, Parellada, Macabeo, Moscatell, Chardonnay and Riesling. Some of the Pla i Llevant wineries are Bodegas Bordoy, Es Fangar, Ca'n Coleto, Miquel Gelabert and Pere Seda. In 2012 the 15 wineries produced 11.095 hl of wine on a surface of 240 hectares.

Besides these two Designations of Origin, the Balearic Islands produce Regional Wines, such as  Illes Balears Regional Wines, Ibiza Regional Wines, Illa de Menorca Regional Wines, Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord Regional Wines, Formentera Regional Wine and Mallorca Regional Wine.
