Meteor shower in Majorca
Until next 25th of April the meteor shower known as Lyrids can be seen from any point of Mallorca. That Lyrids shower is one of the most important celestial events of the year along with the Perseids, the Leonids and Quadrantids. The Lyrids have its origin from the constellation Lyra and can reach up to 200 meteors per hour. The meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering Earth's atmosphere at very high speeds.
The Lyrids can be observed without telescopes from anywhere in Mallorca, but it is recommended to contemplate them from dark places in rural areas for a better view. The meteors are made of tiny particles of ice and rock of comets traveling around the Sun. The Lyrids come from comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher).
