The Bendinat castle
Between two exclusive villages, Illetas and Portals Nous, you can find the castle of Bendinat. Originally the King Jaume I. had built this castle in the 13th century. The legend says that the name of the castle is due to the king who made the following historic expression in Catalan after a simple dinner: “Bé hem dinat”, (We have dined well). Today’s castle, made out of the red sandstone typical for the region, has been built on the foundation walls of this castle.
The Marquis de la Romana has built it in the 19th century. The neo-gothic and medieval style can easily be recognized. Four mighty towers dominate the rectangular building and an ostentatious gate decorates the entrance on the south side. The impressing entrance gate with two squared towers gives a medieval image to the castle. The conservation of antique building elements on one side and the very comfortable and modern equipment of various rooms on the other side, create a smooth transition to various epochs. The extensive gardens make up the centre of this complex and eradiate peace and elegance. Definitely an outstanding castle!
